Black River: Stan Searles - Fifty Years of Conservation
Black River: Stan Searles - Fifty Years of Conservation
February 2, 2021 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
Stanley Searles, the founder and executive director of Global Conservation Connections, will discuss his widely varied conservation career. In his role as Curator of Birds and Aquatics at the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, he collaborated with the Ohio Division of Wildlife in the reintroduction of the trumpeter swan to Ohio. In that project, he collected wild swan eggs in Alaska, oversaw the incubation of the eggs and rearing of the cygnets before placing them at a holding facility at The Wilds near Columbus. He then was involved with releasing the swans over a three-year period.
Later, he partnered with Bioandina, a Venezuelan conservation organization in reintroducing Andean condors back into the wild. Searles continued to work with governmental agencies in Venezuela to ensure the success of the program.
Since his retirement from Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, he has been involved with conservation programs on a local and international level with Global Conservation Connections.

Planting For Birds
Planting For Birds
February 22, 2021 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
Please join our Cincinnati Chapter, Ohio Audubon, as they welcome Greg Torres to discuss Planting for Birds.
Plants and birds have a long history of working together. As an example of mutualism, this development and relationship between plants and birds has had far reaching consequences, encouraging co-evolution that enhanced the survival of both plants and birds. Planting for Birds explores some of these relationships, tips how we can grow plants to create habitats to help birds thrive, as well as resources for selections of beautiful native plants that support our local ecosystem.
Greg is a Florida Master Naturalist and a Nationally Certified Interpretive Guide. Here in Cincinnati, he’s worked for the Cincinnati Zoo, Cincinnati Parks and most recently as the Horticulturist at the Civic Garden Center. He is President of Northside Greenspace Inc. and a board member of Preserve Burnet Woods, volunteer organizations committed to the restoration and long-term care of greenspaces. Greg is a co-host of the podcast Nature Guys and creates educational videos on nature found on YouTube.

Greater Akron AS: Paul Greenfield Live from Ecuador
Greater Akron AS: Paul Greenfield Live from Ecuador
February 23, 2021 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm
The Tiny South American Republic of Ecuador is home to a surprisingly exceptional natural bounty due in no small part to its location and geography. Conservation International has named Ecuador the most biodiverse nation on earth. But this reality faces challenges that, sadly, pose serious threats to the sustainability and long-term survival of the wealth of ecosystems, habitats and species that are found within this nation’s reduced territory. Beyond its impressive numbers of resident species, Ecuador hosts many boreal and austral migrants.
So how do we confront and combat these threats, that not only affect this country, but also impact our North American partners, like Ohio? A number of successful concepts, ideas and strategies have been put into practice by the Mindo Cloudforest Foundation.
The talk is free, but you must register in advance using this link:
https://zoom.us/meeting/register/tJwtf-ivpj0uHN0lgaAVv_MZTRGH4FGnmt8a
After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.
For more information, see the GAAS calendar at http://akronaudubon.org/.
