In Memoriam: Alan Dolan

Lee and Alan Dolan

We have two tributes in honor of our friend and colleague, Alan Dolan, who passed away on October 12, 2020.

Beloved Canton Audubon Society member and past president, Alan Dolan, passed away after a struggle with Multiple Myeloma and Acute Leukemia. He served as president for 30 years for Canton Audubon Society and was a past-president or a board member for other organizations such as Council of Ohio Audubon Chapters (COAC), Friends of Stark Parks, The Wilderness Center and Relay for Life. He also served on the board of the National Audubon Society as Regional Director – Mississippi Flyway North. Alan was the force that held our organization together for years, we exist today because of him.

Alan’s spirit, his heart, his love for life, nature and people was tremendous. He was a conservationist for much of his life, particularly devoted to the protection of birds and the habitats vital to them, known by many near and far for his dedication to that cause. He lived in the hope of passing on a better world for future generations. He was a kind, generous soul and I will be forever grateful to have known him, as all CAS members surely are. He will be missed. There are truly good people in this world and Alan will always be one of them.

Audubon has lost a great friend with the passing of Alan Dolan, and so have I. As he completed his six years of service on the board of the National Audubon Society, he became my mentor and inspiration as I, too, contemplated board service. Alan encouraged me to succeed him, offering his help and advice to help smooth my transition into the role that he had previously filled so well. His counsel and advice were invaluable.

Yet it is not just for his help that I remember Alan. His friendship, his ready smile, his willingness to help out no matter what the situation, and his passion for conservation: those are the things that come to mind when I think of Alan. I treasure the time that I spent with him and Lee, his wife and constant companion. Alan, you are gone too soon — we shall miss you.
